Family and portrait sessions: a guide for Saginaw MI and Dallas-Fort Worth families

When to book

Book before you need the photos.

If you're thinking about a fall session in Saginaw, September and October go fast. Families chasing leaf color and warm afternoon light are reserving spots in July. The same is true in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where late fall offers cooler air and longer golden hours that make outdoor portraits easy.

Spring is the quieter option. Mornings in Saginaw MI start green by late April. In the DFW area, March and April are comfortable outdoors before the heat sets in. Both are worth considering if fall dates feel crowded.

Milestone moments are another reason not to wait. A new baby. A school year change. A grandparent visiting from out of town. An anniversary worth marking. These occasions don't hold still, and the photos you take during them are the ones families actually frame.

A few things that hold up well: soft layers that add texture, clothing everyone is actually comfortable in, and a slight step up from everyday without crossing into formal. Avoid large logos and busy graphics. They compete with faces for attention in every frame.

Kids should be comfortable above everything else. If they're fighting their shoes or scratching at their collar for the whole session, it shows up in every shot.

For what to wear for family photos in natural light, warm tones tend to photograph well outdoors. Bright all-white or solid all-black can create sharp contrast that draws the eye away from the people.

What happens during a TTS session

Sessions start loose on purpose.

The first 10 to 15 minutes are about getting comfortable. For younger kids, that usually means running around and paying attention to everything except the camera. That's fine. We've photographed enough families to know that real images show up after everyone stops performing.

From there, the session moves between candid moments and directed portraits. Family photo session tips often frame these as opposites. They aren't. A good gallery has the quiet, in-between frames AND a well-composed portrait where everyone actually looks good. We shoot both.

You'll hear "just walk toward me" or "say something funny to her" more than "everybody smile and hold still." Sessions run 60 to 90 minutes depending on your package. By the end, most clients say they forgot a camera was there.

Galleries arrive within five to seven days of your session. You'll receive a private link to your full edited gallery, downloadable in full resolution, no watermarks. Print wherever you like.
